In an interview with PC Gamer , Creative Director, Joel Bylos pointed to a ” single point ” that Funcom changed while working closely with the family of Dune author Frank Herbert, which was a major catalyst in the original story. While he didn’t elaborate on what this exact moment was, he did reveal that many characters who died early in the dune Awakening dlc story are alive and can be interacted with in Dune: Awakening , including Duke Leto Atreides.
Our first look at Dune: Awakening was brief, but special. It taps into everything that makes the franchise great, explains it all well in its narrative and MMO underpinnings, and offers plenty of opportunities for players to engage with the world around them. The Dune franchise is only going to become increasingly popular, it would seem, and it looks like Dune: Awakening is prepared to ride that wave like the Fremen ride sandwo
This allows you to build hybrid characters, and will take some real time to find out what works for your playstyle the best, which is why choosing your starting class is such an important decision. The sandworms are near, and there’s no time to waste starting o
Those who have read the books or watched the films know this is a major departure as Leto died after being handed over to the Harkonnens by his private Suk Doctor, Wellington Yueh, during the attack on Arrakis by Baron Harkonnen’s forces. Before giving Leto to the Harkonnens, Yueh replaced one of Leto’s teeth with a poison gas capsule and told Leto to bite down hard to release the deadly gas. Although Leto did this, his main target, Baron Harkonnen survived, but Leto succumbed to the effects of the poison himself.
Combat can go any number of ways in survival games, and Dune: Awakening finds itself somewhere right in the middle. It is fun and serviceable, even if it is not exactly groundbreaking for the genre. Players can acquire new skills throughout the skill trees, based on archetypes in Dune like the Bene Gesserit , and use those in various combat encounters. Because of my choices at the start of the game, I began with a deployable turret. Throughout my time with the game, it became my go-to skill because it would consistently kill all enemies in the area very quickly. I later acquired a deployable shield wall that would also let me protect myself and let the turret put in the work. The combination was fun, although there were times when I had (or wanted) to get involved myself. My third skill was effectively a poison grenade, but I only used it if my turret couldn’t be deplo
Visually, **Dune: Awakening ** looks like it’s set in the world of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movie adaptations, with the studio behind these films, Legendary, having shared assets with the development team at Funcom, as well as inviting them on set. Despite this, the game’s story has made at least one massive change from the book and the movies that could have major consequences going forward.
Spice plays a major role in Dune , so it logically does in Dune: Awakening as well. Players will be able to enter entire Deep Desert regions dedicated to acquiring Spice, but both factions obviously want this resource. Players will need to construct bases, acquire Spice, get it safely, and otherwise face others in PvP over this valuable resource. There will be environmental conditions, story elements, and plenty of gameplay tied to acquiring Spice, but it’s also where Dune: Awakening truly comes into its own as an MMO. Once a week or so, a Coriolis Storm will sweep through these areas – destroying everything both sides have constructed and acquired. A new location will open up, and the fight for the Spice begins a
It’s understandable, albeit unfortunate, why the newest preview didn’t give much of the more MMO elements of the title away simply due to the location of the demo. However, what was clear from my time with the game was that Funcom has deeply leaned into the harsher aspects of Arrakis, with an emphasis on players having to build their character up from nothing . Even basic traversal is difficult at first, and it really captures the feeling of being lost and struggling in the desert post-crash. Though it’s hard, this harshness contributes to future feelings of accomplishment as w
Once you have a blood purifier and a blood bag, you’ll be able to collect the blood of your enemies, purify it, and drink it to survive. There are a few things you need to do in order to be prepared for Arrakis. Hydrate, stock up on healing supplies and ammunition, make sure your equipment is repaired , and make room in your inventory for new l
It is not Minecraft where punching trees can result in resources; this is Dune. Dune is complex and hard to translate to any other medium, so working with tools like cutterays and various fabricators is something new, surviving the sands of Arrakis is complex, and engaging with all of its features is intensive. Teaching players how all of this works is a must, and the early hours of Dune: Awakening are wholly focused on teaching players to survive the hostile pla
