On the plus side, once you’re in the Minecraft world the sense of scale is truly fantastic. Everything seems bigger somehow, more immediate and solid. A pit in a cave that would be little more than a hazard to plop a staircase onto is all of a sudden an ominous presence waiting to see you fall into its depths. Hills are more imposing, cliffs shoot dangerously into the sky and canyons are massive rifts in the earth, and the oceans go down forever. Even the standard block has a sense of mass, with its one meter cube transformed into a substantial chunk of scenery. Another side effect of the new sense of scale is that combat has become a little easier because the strike distance is so obvious. Another issue that impacted the episode as a whole were the amount of times that the members of the Order backtracked into flashbacks that told of the argument that disbanded them. While I understand that it’s crucial to the story, it took away completely from the decision making and the story that revolves around Jessie and the Wither Storm. The characters, minus a scene with Petra, receive almost no depth and leave it to the environments and the little bit of dialogue to develop them. With the environments being the main reason to play the episode, the lack of exploration doesn’t help its case. For a game that is meant to develop according to character choices, there didn’t seem to be a whole lot of decision-making going to develop the story further. Hopefully, the cliffhanger ending will pose as an entryway to further Jessie and his friend’s role in all of this instead of being focused on the Order.
Clocking in at roughly two hours, this episode is one of the longer Telltale episodes right behind the first episode of Tales from the Borderlands. Even though it’s generally long for an episode, it doesn’t mean that time was wasted. With every passing second, new lore is learned about this rendition of the Minecraft world and how characters perceive the strange world around them. Who knew that people were pretty used to the idea of killing a dragon from another dimension and hosting a convention in honor of the heroes who slew it?
Yes, you could say that. This is a free building game but it is story driven, and what is built drives the progression of the story which we feel is one of the more interesting aspects of the game. As you build up your town it attracts more NPCs, but it also attracts monsters that will come to attack your town and try to destroy it. There is an ending to the story and there are major events at certain points in the story but these can be reached at any pace the player chooses. The player can only focus on completing the story and rush through the game or they can complete the story at a leisurely pace and spent a lot of time building what they want to and exploring the world. Dragon Quest Builders was designed to be played in whatever style someone chooses to.
Yet Nintendo ignores it, just as they have ignored pleas from their own fans regarding everything from addressing many of the issues already noted, to making their own historically great back catalog more readily available. Yes they’ve done things like release Earthbound on the Wii U, but only after years and years of remaining silent on the subject while fans begged and pleaded for even an acknowledgment of the damn thing.
The introduction of the demo heavily references the first Dragon Quest, from the remixed Dragon Lord theme to the explanation that this takes place after Erdrick’s descendant chose the bad ending. Will there be references to other games in the series or any specific characters making an appearance, such as Alena from IV or Yangus from VIII?
They’re unwilling to go out of their way to adapt major third party releases. They are painfully slow to adopt an indie market that could actually make good use of the Wii U’s unique capabilities. They seem, at times, to be woefully oblivious to the current state of the game industry, and determined to turn the Wii U into a time machine that will make it 1987 again. They seemingly have a hero complex that drives them to be the only ones who make a game that turns it all around.

Someone needs to have a nice sitdown with the gaming industry about VR and what it can and can’t do. The ability to transport the viewer inside a scene is incredible, and if that scene happens to be in the cockpit of some kind of ship, then it opens up a whole range of movement options that would otherwise be a bad idea. Putting the player behind the eyes of a protagonist who walks around freely in the standard FPS viewpoint, on the other hand, is something that has only sounded awesome. It’s hasn’t been. Really, seriously, it’s kind of sucked, and while wanting it to be different won’t change that, clever viewing systems just might. So now Minecraft has official VR support, and it’s taken an interesting approach to the presentation that’s a little awkward but usable.
