Electric drum sets are popular with beginners, home musicians, and professional drummers because they provide realistic drum sounds without the quantity of an acoustic kit. While headphones are handy for private follow, there are situations when it’s your decision everyone within the room to listen to your playing. In that case, connecting your electric drum set to an amplifier is without doubt one of the easiest solutions.
Fortuitously, connecting electronic drums to an amp is often straightforward. With the correct cable and amplifier, you’ll be able to have your drum kit producing highly effective sound within minutes.
Check the Outputs on Your Drum Module
The drum module is the control center of an electric drum set. Your drum pads and cymbals send signals to the module, which converts them into drum sounds.
Before connecting anything, look at the output part of your module. Most electronic drum modules embody outputs labeled something just like:
OUTPUT
MAIN OUT
L/MONO
R
PHONES
In case your module has L/MONO and R outputs, you can connect both outputs for stereo sound. Nevertheless, if you are using a single amplifier, the L/MONO connection is generally the easiest option.
Some newbie electronic drum kits could only have a headphone output. You’ll be able to still join these kits to an amplifier, however you might want a unique cable or adapter.
Select the Proper Amplifier
Technically, an electric drum set can produce sound through several types of amplification systems, however not each amplifier is ideal.
A dedicated electronic drum amplifier is normally the best choice because it is designed to reproduce the wide frequency range produced by a drum kit. Kick drums require robust low-frequency reproduction, while cymbals and hi-hats contain a lot higher frequencies.
Keyboard amplifiers and powered PA speakers can even work extremely well because they’re designed to reproduce a broad frequency spectrum.
Guitar amplifiers are generally not recommended. Guitar speakers are optimized for electric guitar frequencies and may not reproduce electronic drums accurately. Powerful kick drum sounds may also put pointless stress on smaller guitar speakers.
Get the Correct Audio Cable
Most electric drum modules use normal 1/4-inch audio outputs.
For a simple mono connection, you will usually need a 1/four-inch instrument or audio cable. Join one end to the L/MONO output on the drum module and the other end to the input in your amplifier.
If you need stereo sound and your amplification system supports it, you need to use cables:
One cable from the L output
One cable from the R output
Stereo amplification can make sure drum kits and effects sound more spacious, particularly when totally different cymbals and toms are positioned throughout the stereo field.
If your drum module only provides a 3.5 mm headphone output, you could want a 3.5 mm-to-1/4-inch cable or suitable adapter.
Turn the Volume Down Earlier than Connecting
Earlier than plugging your drum set into the amplifier, turn down the quantity on both devices.
This simple step helps forestall sudden pops or excessively loud sounds from reaching the speaker.
Connect your cable from the drum module’s output to the amplifier’s input. As soon as everything is related, turn on the drum module and amplifier.
Start with the amplifier quantity low. Play just a few drum pads while gradually growing the module and amplifier quantity until you reach a comfortable level.
Keep away from immediately setting either machine to maximum volume.
Adjust the Sound Settings
As soon as your electric drum set is related, you might need to make a couple of adjustments.
Many electronic drum amplifiers embrace controls for bass, midrange, and treble. Start with the EQ controls in their neutral positions and listen to the drum kit.
If the kick drum sounds weak, slightly rising the bass may help. If cymbals sound too harsh, reducing the treble can produce a smoother sound.
You can too adjust individual instrument levels through many drum modules. For example, if the snare is far louder than the kick drum, chances are you’ll be able to change their relative volumes directly from the module.
Can You Connect Electronic Drums to a PA System?
Yes. A PA system is definitely probably the greatest options once you need your electric drums to be loud enough for rehearsals, performances, or larger rooms.
You can join the drum module directly to powered PA speakers or send its outputs to a mixing console. A mixer provides additional control over quantity, EQ, and routing.
For live performances, the drum module’s left and right outputs are sometimes connected to separate mixer channels or stereo inputs.
Common Connection Problems
Should you join your electric drums and hear no sound, first check that the right output is being used. Make sure the cable is totally inserted into each devices and confirm that neither the module nor amplifier is muted.
You should also test another cable if attainable, since damaged audio cables are a typical cause of connection problems.
If the sound is distorted, reduce the output level from the drum module or lower the amplifier’s enter gain. Extreme achieve can cause clipping and make otherwise high-quality electronic drums sound unpleasant.
Getting the Best Sound From Your Electric Drum Set
Connecting an electric drum set to an amplifier normally requires nothing more than the right audio cable and a suitable speaker system. For most players using one amplifier, running a 1/4-inch cable from the module’s L/MONO output to the amplifier provides the simplest setup.
For follow at home, a dedicated electronic drum amplifier offers excellent convenience. For rehearsals and performances, powered PA speakers or a whole PA system generally provide more quantity and flexibility.
As soon as everything is related appropriately, spend a couple of minutes adjusting quantity and EQ settings. The proper setup can make an electronic drum kit sound significantly more highly effective, balanced, and realistic.
