Recording drums at home used to require multiple microphones, a treated room, a mixing console, and loads of patience. Electronic drums have made the process a lot easier. With the appropriate equipment, you may record professional-sounding drum tracks directly into your computer without worrying about microphone placement or disturbing your neighbors.
Whether or not you might be creating demos, producing complete songs, or recording drum covers, learning how one can record music with an electronic drum set offers you many flexible options.
Select How You Wish to Record Your Electronic Drums
Earlier than connecting anything, resolve what type of recording you want. Electronic drum sets generally supply two major recording strategies: recording the audio generated by the drum module or recording MIDI information.
Audio recording captures the actual drum sounds coming from your electronic drum module. What you hear while playing is essentially what gets recorded.
MIDI recording works differently. Instead of recording sound, your pc records information about which drum pad you hit, how hard you hit it, and when the hit happenred. Music software can then use this information to trigger virtual drum sounds.
Many musicians prefer MIDI because it gives larger flexibility during editing and mixing.
Recording Audio From an Electronic Drum Set
One of the simplest methods is connecting the audio outputs of your electronic drum module to an audio interface.
Most electronic drum modules embody stereo outputs labeled something much like “Master Out,” “Line Out,” or “L/Mono and R.”
Join these outputs to the inputs of your audio interface utilizing appropriate audio cables. Then connect the audio interface to your computer through USB.
Open your digital audio workstation (DAW), reminiscent of Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Cubase, Reaper, or one other recording application.
Create a new audio track and select your audio interface because the enter source. After checking your recording levels, press record and start playing.
Keep the input level high enough to produce a robust signal without allowing it to reach the clipping range. Digital clipping can create disagreeable distortion that’s tough to repair afterward.
Recording Electronic Drums With MIDI
MIDI recording is among the biggest advantages of using electronic drums.
Many modern electronic drum modules can send MIDI directly through USB. Older or easier models may use traditional 5-pin MIDI connections, which normally require a MIDI interface.
Connect your electronic drum module to your computer and select it as a MIDI input machine inside your DAW.
You will also want drum software or a virtual drum instrument. Well-liked drum plugins provide realistic samples of acoustic drum kits, electronic kits, percussion instruments, and different sounds.
If you hit the electronic drum pads, your module sends MIDI notes to the software. The virtual instrument then produces the corresponding drum sounds.
Because MIDI records performance data moderately than completed audio, you may change the drum kit after recording without performing the song again.
Edit Your Drum Performance
Another major advantage of electronic drum recording is easy editing.
With MIDI tracks, individual drum hits may be moved, deleted, added, or adjusted. If your timing is slightly inaccurate, your DAW’s quantization function may help align sure notes with the musical grid.
However, extreme quantization can make drums sound robotic. Keeping small timing variations usually produces a more natural performance.
MIDI velocity will also be adjusted. Velocity represents how hard every pad was struck and often affects the amount and character of the drum sound.
You can due to this fact appropriate individual snare, kick, tom, or cymbal hits without recording your entire performance again.
Reduce Latency While Recording
Latency is the delay between hitting a drum pad and hearing the resulting sound out of your computer.
Even a small delay can make electronic drums difficult to play accurately.
Using a quality audio interface with properly configured drivers can significantly reduce latency. Lowering the audio buffer size in your recording software also can help.
In case you are simply recording the sounds out of your drum module, monitoring directly through the module’s headphone output can usually provide practically prompt feedback.
Record Separate Drum Tracks When Potential
More advanced electronic drum modules and software setups may permit individual drums to be recorded onto separate tracks.
For example, you might need separate tracks for the kick, snare, toms, hi-hat, cymbals, and overhead sounds.
This approach provides you much higher control throughout mixing. You can apply different EQ, compression, reverb, and volume settings to each part of the drum kit.
If your drum module only provides a stereo output, MIDI recording combined with drum software is usually the best way to achieve related mixing flexibility.
Getting Better Electronic Drum Recordings
The quality of an electronic drum recording depends on more than the drum kit itself. Spend a while adjusting pad sensitivity, velocity curves, cymbal response, and trigger settings before recording.
Select drum sounds that match the style of music you might be producing, and record a number of takes slightly than making an attempt to good everything in one performance.
Electronic drums make home recording remarkably accessible. By recording the module’s audio, utilizing MIDI and virtual instruments, or combining both approaches, you may create detailed drum tracks without a traditional drum recording studio. As soon as your equipment is configured appropriately, recording drums can develop into as simple as opening your DAW, selecting your tracks, and urgent record.
