The Legend of “Goldy”: How Dino Ciccarelli Became a Minnesota Icon
In the rich tapestry of Minnesota hockey history, certain names evoke immediate nostalgia. While the state’s official collegiate mascot is Goldy Gopher, to a generation of Minnesota North Stars fans, the nickname “Goldy” belonged to one man: Dino Ciccarelli.
Undrafted, undersized, and written off by many after a catastrophic leg injury in his youth, Ciccarelli’s journey to becoming a definitive Minnesota icon is a masterclass in grit, resilience, and pure goal-scoring instinct.
The 1981 Playoff Explosion
Ciccarelli’s arrival in Bloomington wasn’t met with massive fanfare, but he didn’t wait long to introduce himself. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 1979, he burst into the lineup during the 1980–81 season. What followed in the 1981 Stanley Cup Playoffs remains the stuff of NHL legend.
As a rookie, Ciccarelli electrified the Met Center by scoring 14 goals and 21 points in a single postseason run. It set an NHL playoff record for rookies and propelled the North Stars to their first-ever Stanley Cup Final appearance. Overnight, a hockey hero was born in the State of Hockey.
King of the “Garbage Goals”
Minnesota fans have always valued hard work over flashy style, and Ciccarelli fit that blueprint perfectly. Standing at just 5’10”, he made his living in the most dangerous area on the ice: the crease.
Ciccarelli mastered the art of the net-front presence. He would park himself right in front of opposing goaltenders, willingly absorbing brutal cross-checks, slashes, and hits from much larger defensemen. From that chaotic blue paint, he scored what hockey purists affectionately call “garbage goals”—rebounds, deflections, and gritty put-backs. This fearless, lunch-bucket work ethic instantly endeared him to the blue-collar hockey culture of Minnesota.
Rewriting the Record Books
In the 1981–82 campaign, “Goldy” proved his rookie playoff explosion was no fluke. He shattered franchise records north stars table by becoming the first player in North Stars history to score 50 goals in a single season, finishing the year with an astonishing 55 goals and 106 points.
He would hit the 50-goal milestone again in the 1986–87 season with 52 goals. Over his nine seasons wearing the green and gold, he racked up 332 goals for the franchise, cementing his place as one of the most prolific offensive forces the state had ever seen.

An Enduring Legacy
Though he was traded to the Washington Capitals in 1989 and eventually inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010, Ciccarelli’s impact on Minnesota never faded. When the North Stars left for Dallas in 1993, the memories of number 22 battling in the crease remained anchored in Minnesota.
Dino Ciccarelli didn’t just score goals; he embodied the spirit of Minnesota hockey—unyielding, passionate, and forever tough.
